It is a wonderful get-away for the family. There is a great feeling of quiet and peace, yet it is only 5 minutes drive to a beautiful beach. The very spacious dining and kitchen room is full of light. The living room is very comfortable and on cooler evenings you can enjoy the warmth of a real log fire. Hidden away at the top of the house is a quiet space where you can sit and read a book, or just gaze out the window as you relax and enjoy the peace and quiet which surrounds you.

This is a beautiful gatelodge situated just outside the town of Ballycastle.
Magherintemple Lodge was built in the Scottish Baronial style in 1874, possibly by the architect S P Close. At the same time as the lodge was constructed, an extension was added to the main house also in the same style. The family believes that the main house was designed by John Lanyon but no definite evidence for the name of the architect survives. The original Georgian House was relatively modest but contained good reeded ornamentation with the Victorian addition containing much fancy pine detailing. It was John Casement, the father of Sir Roger, who built on the Victorian wing, adding a date stone and his initials over the drawing room window. The Scottish Baronial style he chose was very plain. However, the stepped gables, finials and chimney stacks break up the austerity of the building. This Victorian addition considerably improved the value of the estate. We know that in 1834, the house was valued at only £11.15.0 and between 1851 and 1879, the house and outbuildings were valued at £25. In 1878 it was shown as "rebuilding", and in the following year the valuation had shot up to £60.
John Casement inscribed over the front door of his home, "In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths" and later in his life decided to take the pledge. Many of the next generation of the Casement family took to seafaring while the fate of another member of the family, Sir Roger Casement, is well known.

Arrival and Departure Time?
Unless otherwise agreed with the House Manager the earliest time at which you can check in is 4.oop.m. Guests may NOT take over the property any time later then 9.00pm. Guests are requested to vacate the property by 10.00am at the latest on the day of departure.
Is there a TV?
No, but there is a radio, board games, cards and plenty of books.
Is there WiFi?
No, at our properties you have an opportunity to experience the best of a former way of life: beautiful architecture, fascinating history and a peaceful relaxed ambiance, without modern electronic distractions, where you decide the pace of your holiday.
Can I bring a dog?
Yes. Check the Irish Landmark T&Cs re bringing dogs to Irish Landmark properties. This property is only suitable for one dog.
Is linen supplied?
Yes – all beds are prepared and ready for your arrival.
Is there an open fire?
Yes. There is an open fire in the sitting room. There is a limited amount of fuel left for the fire (where applicable) so guests may want to bring more for the duration of their stay. Please contact the local House Manager for more information on what type of fuel is used at your chosen property.
Can I bring more than one dog?
This property is only suitable for one dog.
Can I light a fire?
Yes. You can light the open fire in the sitting room.
Do I need a car to get here?
It would be preferable to have a car as otherwise it will be difficult to get to shops, etc.
How do I get the keys?
When you complete your booking, you will receive an email giving you information about arranging access on your arrival date.
Can I arrive early?
Only by special arrangement with the bookings office and agreement of the local House Manager. A charge is made if you are requesting a morning arrival, as this means we cannot take a booking for the night before your arrival date.
What is the latest departure time?
10.00am. The House Manager will discuss arrangements for your departure on the day you arrive.
How far to the nearest town?
About 5 mins drive to the town of Ballycastle.
Is there a caterer who will come in to cook meals?
We do not know of anyone who can go in to cook meals at this property.
Is it suitable for children?
This property has a twin room with bunk beds that is ideal for children. There is also a sandy beach 5 mins drive away at nearby Ballycastle which children will love.
Is it suitable for older people?
Yes. This property is ideal for older people as all the rooms are situated on the ground floor.
Does it have facilities for disabled people?
The downstairs bathroom would be suitable for the assisted disabled.
Is it suitable for a wheelchair?

There is part gas central heating with radiators and underfloor heating.

Is there a shower?
Yes - there is a walk in shower in the downstairs bathroom.
How many bathrooms?
Do you supply towels and bed linen?
Yes. The beds will be made up on your arrival and you will be provided with a bath towel and guest towel according to the number of beds in the property.
Can I get to the house by public transport?
Yes. You would get a train or bus to Ballymena and a local bus to Ballycastle. A taxi could take you onwards from there to the lodge. However, you would need a car to get to local shops, etc.

Part underfloor heating and part gas central heating.
Can I book for just one night?
What is your minimum booking period?
Irish Landmark Trust have a 2 night stay minimum at all of our properties. Some Special Dates will have restrictions on arrival and departure date which will effect the minimum number of nights.

Yes. There is a large lawned area and a patio.
