The Schoolhouse, Annaghmore, Co Sligo

THE SCHOOLHOUSE, ANNAGHMORE, CO SLIGOTHE SCHOOLHOUSE, ANNAGHMORE, CO SLIGOTHE SCHOOLHOUSE, ANNAGHMORE, CO SLIGOTHE SCHOOLHOUSE, ANNAGHMORE, CO SLIGO

Built in the 1860s, The Schoolhouse, Annaghmore is an attractive rural building picturesquely located by the Owenmore River and surrounded by mature woodland. The building retains many original decorative features including ornamental wooden bargeboards and lattice windows surmounted by wooden hood mouldings. The most striking feature is the projecting oriel window on the upper east gable.

This L-shaped one and a half storey building originally comprised of a two-storey accommodation area (the schoolmaster’s residence) and a double height schoolroom. Some 19th Century schoolhouse furnishings still survive including the schoolhouse fireplace, coat hooks and chalkboards.

The Schoolhouse at Annaghmore is located in an area of south-west Sligo that is ideal as a starting point for visiting the many attractions of the county and further a field. Sligo is one of the most beautiful and varied counties in Ireland. The lakes of Sligo, with their still waters and wooded islands are spectacular and form a striking contrast to the Dartry and Ox mountain ranges. The wealth of activities and places to see in the region ensure that there is something to please all age groups and interests.

There are wonderful walking opportunities right on the doorstep, beautiful beaches within a few miles, championship golf courses and other sporting activities. And, of course, Co. Sligo is intimately associated with William Butler Yeats, one of Ireland’s most famous literary sons, its foremost poet, a co-founder of Dublin’s Abbey Theatre and a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Schoolhouse is located off the main Galway/Sligo road (N17), approximately 1 mile from Ballinacarrow village, 4 miles from Ballymote and 7 miles from Sligo town.
