Learning From Henrietta: Mon 12th October

Learning from Henrietta:
Fabric Repair and use of an 18th Century Street
The Irish Landmark Trust, Dublin City Council, and king’s Inns have collaborated in organising this seminar in order to stimulate discussion about the repair, use and usefulness of 18th –century urban domestic buildings.
The focus will be on Henrietta Street Dublin, and particularly on numbers 3 and 14 where City Council has completed the first phase of a major conservation programme. Conservation is always only a beginning: if a conserved house or street or precinct is to live, it must accommodate life.
What can we learn from Henrietta Street? We hope that answers suggested here can be extended beyond the street and city to the whole country and its holdings of 18th –century urban domestic buildings – houses, mews, stable lanes, living communities.
In the morning we will talk of broad conservation principles before concentrating on the architectural, engineering and craft technicalities of fabric repair. The afternoon will open with a discussion of the role of conservation plans and a presentation – based on the experience of the Irish Landmark trust – on problems of use, and accommodation for reuse, of older buildings such as numbers 3 and 14.
An open forum will follow, presided over by people who, in various ways, have displayed a commitment to the grandest Georgian Street in Ireland. A fitting end to a day where we all hope to ‘to learn from Henrietta’.
